Help Us Keep Independent Muslim Journalism Alive.
Letter from the Founder & Editor-in-Chief on what @Muslim is and why it exists.
﷽
My name is Ameer Al-Khatahtbeh, and I’m the person behind the @Muslim Instagram page.
As of this publication date, @Muslim is the most-followed Muslim media company across social media, boasting 6.5 million followers on Instagram, 2.8 Million followers on TikTok, and 1.3 Million followers on Threads.
Chances are, if you liked, commented on, shared, or engaged with a post on Instagram, I’m the person behind the screen who created the graphic and posted the content that has appeared in your feed for the past five years.
I started the @
page on February 15, 2019, while studying journalism at Rutgers University. It began as a side project after I recognized the lack of accurate Muslim storytelling and representation in mainstream media. The idea struck me in 2016, following Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States. His administration led a smear campaign against the Muslim community and enacted the Muslim travel ban, resulting in a significant rise in Islamophobia.
During this time, I noticed that mainstream media often centered discussions about Muslims without including Muslim voices or stories in their narratives.
This realization naturally led me to the idea of building a mainstream media platform for Muslims.
