Syria's Bashar al-Assad’s Regime Has Come to an End

Syria has been liberated, Israel enters Syria and continues ceasefire violations, over 60k die of starvation in Gaza + more

Syria’s armed opposition forces seized the capital, Damascus, ending President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule on Saturday.

The announcements came hours after the opposition groups, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), seized several cities in a lightning offensive.

The rebels said they had entered the capital with no sign of army deployments. Thousands of people in cars and on foot congregated at a main square waving and chanting "Freedom" from a half century of Assad family rule, witnesses told Reuters.

"We celebrate with the Syrian people the news of freeing our prisoners and releasing their chains," the rebels said.

The opposition freed hundreds of those “wrongfully detained” from the city’s central prison.

🚨 ISRAEL CONTINUES TO BREAK CEASEFIRE: Israel has continued to strike Lebanon despite a ceasefire going into effect last week. Several countries have accused Israel of breaching the ceasefire including France which said Dec. 1 that Israel had breached it at least 52 times.

🏥 NO MORE SURGEONS: Gaza’s civil defense agency spokesperson, Mahmoud Basal, told Al Jazeera that Israeli forces fired at Kamal Adwan Hospital and ambulances in northern Gaza.

Per Basal, there are no more surgeons at Kamal Adwan Hospital. The vicinity, attacked earlier today, was the only hospital left that could perform necessary operations in the northern area.

🇵🇸 THE PAST 24 HOURS: At least 29 Palestinians have been killed in “a series of air strikes on the northern and western sides” of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, according to the enclave’s health ministry.

According to an Al Jazeera’s correspondent on the ground patients and staff at Kamal Adwan Hospital were “soaked in blood” after multiple Israeli drone strikes.

💔 OVER 60K HAVE DIED FROM STARVATION IN GAZA: According to an October 2, 2024 letter to President Biden from a group of U.S. physicians, 62,413 people in Gaza have died of starvation.

Since October 7, 2023, at least 45,400 Palestinians have been killed with over 17,000 identified as children, according to the enclave’s health ministry— several of the deaths include journalists, media and healthcare workers.
